SWT Crop Report

08/25/2010 - SW Saskatchewan Crop Report Aug 18,2010

Crops are continuing to progress after last weeks inclement weather although there is more storm damage to add to the list as last weeks
heavy rain included hail in large areas between Gull Lake and Tompkins,
as well as causing a lot of damage to lentils. Pea harvest has started
in earnest.
Cereals
About 5% of wheat and durum is ready to combine, 20% in hard dough
stage, 60 - 70% in milk to soft dough with the remainder in embryo to
early milk. Lots of tan spot / stagnospora stains on the heads, as well
as a small amount of fusarium being noted, expect at least 50% of the
durum crop to have grading issues with black point. Best crop condition
is south of the 13 highway, where ripening is much more advanced, could
see some harvest by end of next week.
Barley is in very good condition, with a small amount dessicated
(feed), and swathing starting, could see some straight combining next
week. About half is in hard dough or better, 45% in soft dough, small
amount still in milk. As of yet there are no reports of sprouting.
Oilseeds
Mustards in good condition – could see some yellow / oriental harvested
along border this week / early next, swathing to start farther north
next week. 5% of canola swathed or desiccated, expect about 30-40% to
get swathed in next 10 days. Pulses
Peas are starting to come off – no yield reports yet, less than 10%
harvested, but so far in good condition. Lentils are another story –
about half of green acres and maybe 15-20% of red acres are severely
affected by schlerotinia / botrytis which is completely rotting some
areas of the fields. Small acreage of reds are ready to combine / or in
the bin, about 80% or remainder is dessicated or ready to swath /
dessicate. Sprouting of lower pods on standing red lentils is wide
spread. Less than 50% of large greens are ready to swath / dessicate,
could see some harvest at Eastend / Frontier by late next week. Winter
Cereals
Most winter wheat varieties will be ready to combine by weekend / early
next week, with the exception of Radiant looks to be an excellent crop,
although hand threshing is indicating lots of piebald kernels (low
protein????). Radiant stalks are staying green and will be a little
later. Lots of rye was swathed prior to last weeks rain, so lots of
sprouting issues.
